OFFICIAL RULES

Adult Division Rules

  • Contest is distance only
  • Qualifying distance for Mens Division- 90 feet; Womens Division- 65 feet
  • If the fly comes off, a new fly will be retied, the cast repeated.
  • Rods, lines, leaders, fly material and line cleaning supplies are provided by ISE. Personal equipment is not allowed.
  • The fly is a piece of yarn
  • Competitors have three casts to achieve maximum distance. One warm-up cast is allowed; competitor can keep the warm-up cast if he/she requests to have it measured. If contestant keeps the warm-up, contestant receives two more casts
  • Length of cast is determined by the furthest point of the fly from the front of the casting area
  • Fly must land within the confines of the fly pond or defined casting lane. A fly that goes "out of bounds" will not be recorded and counts as one of the three attempts.
  • Contestant stepping over starting marker will have that cast disallowed.
  • All casts must be completed within 3 minutes.

NOTE: The Tournament Manager reserves the right to modify rules and procedures, at any time, to maintain overall fairness and efficient operations of the tournament.

Youth Division Rules

  • Contestants age 14 years and under are eligible for the youth division
  • Youth Division includes boys and girls
  • Qualifying Distance: 35ft
  • Equipment: Youth division entrants will use a Scientific Anglers 9ft, 5/6 wt rod and reel combination with Scientific Anglers Head Start line, 9 ft, OX leader.
  • All other Best of the West rules apply

Qualifying Champions

Casters are welcome to visit and cast in as many Best of the West competitions as they choose during the season. Casters winning the first place position at any qualifying event can only cast for exhibition during a subsequent qualifying event if time allows.

Championship Finals

The championship finals will be held at the final ISE show of the season. For that round, the first place finishers from each qualifying event will be invited to compete. If a first place finisher chooses not to compete, the second place and third place finishers (in that order) will be invited.

  • The 2008 BOTW Champions, Cezanne Alexander and Steve Rajeff, will have automatic placement in the 2009 Championship Finals.
