GEOFF NEMNICH has been an outdoor enthusiast his entire life, but his "addiction" for calling coyotes started more than 20 years ago. As a member of Cabela’s Pro Staff and a contributing writer for Predator Xtreme magazine, Geoff spends numerous days in the field each season and is extremely passionate about sharing his love for coyote hunting with others. Don’t Blow Your Hunt--Don’t Choose a Calling Strategy that Sets You Up for Failure!
With more and more elk hunting videos being available through social media and video-streaming platforms these days, it's easy to watch someone else's successful hunt, and start to believe that if you simply do what they do, on your next hunt, you'll be successful as well. Unfortunately, however, many folks overlook the fact that the successful elk hunt they just watched may have been in a different area (if not a completely different State), at a different time of the season, with different environmental and elk herd characteristics, etc., with hunting and calling strategies being executed by folks with - possibly - differing levels of expertise, and quite frankly – luck!
Regardless of who you wish to learn from, try to emmulate, reference, etc. for your elk hunting knowlege, take time to understand the factors that allowed that person/group be successful in that moment of time, as opposed to simply "doing what they did" because it happened to work on the video(s) you enjoyed. Often times, not understanding WHAT you are doing in a particular scenario, and WHY you're doing it, can actually set you up for more consistent failure, than more consisten success. There are a LOT of great elk hunts/hunters out there, but to truly become a better hunter for yourself, commit to understanding WHY you pick certain hunting tactics and/or strategies, in certain situations, as opposed to simply becoming better at copying what you see others do.
